Toyota Tundra History

Toyota has manufactured its acclaimed Tundra brand of full-sized pickup trucks for some 20 years. Beginning in May 1999, the automaker introduced the Tundra to North America. Hideo Kondo and Yusuku Fukushima designed the first generation of the acclaimed Tundra. Toyota arranged for manufacturing to commence at a plant in Princeton, Indiana. The automaker ultimately settled upon the brand name "Tundra" in an effort to distinguish its product in the eyes of the public from the widely recognized Ford F-150, a competitor.

In 2000, the exciting Tundra truck gained an important honor. Popular Motor Trend magazine ranked this truck as its choice for a prestigious annual award. Craig Kember significantly re-designed the Tundra in 2003 and 2004. A second generation of the vehicle entered the marketplace soon afterward with the release of the 2007 model. The Tundra once again won Motor Trend's Truck of the Year award in 2008. Toyota decided to move its entire Tundra production facilities to a plant in San Antonio, Texas in 2008. Matt Sperling modified the brand's appearance slightly in 2011. Today, the second generation of this beloved vehicle continues to inspire customer interest.

The Appearance of The Tundra Over Time

The earliest Tundra trucks employed some of the same design aspects as two other Toyota brands: the Toyota Tacoma and the Toyota T100. The first generation (covering the model years from 2000 to 2006) offered a two-door regular cab, a four-door access cab, and a four-door double cab. The first two trims used a 128.3-inch long wheelbase (i.e. the distance between the centers of the front and rear wheels), while the double cab relied upon a slightly longer 140.5-inch wheelbase. Although full-sized, the first Tundras appeared less massive and leaner than many competing pickups. Toyota revised the appearance of the grille in the 2003 model, giving customers the choice of more available exterior options, including an all-black front grille selection.

The second generation of the Tundra began with the 2007 model and continues to the present day. The design team expanded the size of the wheelbase to offer a greater selection of possible configurations. Additionally, the truck acquired a more massive, beefier appearance. The access cab trim package went out of production, replaced by a new four-door double cab and an even larger 4-door crewmax cab. Toyota redesigned the 2014 model's exterior to create a slightly mounded hood with a higher profile and an expanded front grille and front bumper.

Some Recent Performance Updates

Over the course of time, the Tundra's engine has undergone successive modifications to increase its horsepower. As the engine gained horsepower (progressing from 190 horsepower in 2000 to up to 381 horsepower today), it has also come to rely upon less weighty, quieter components. Current models utilize a powerful 5.7 Liter DOHC gasoline-powered engine. It employs an exhaust constructed from stainless steel. This impressive engineering contributes to the popularity of the 2020 Toyota Tundra.
