Knowing which hitch to use to haul your boat or ATV, and how to attach it properly to your truck can be tricky. That’s why you’ll want to read our quick guide below to learn more about hitch systems and how they’re used.

Carry Or Distribute?

Weight-carrying and weight-distributing hitches are the most commonly used on the road. Both of these slide into your vehicle’s towing receiver hitch. You’ll find weight-carrying hitches used often with an ATV, tent trailer or lightweight trailers. Featuring a heavy-duty system that uses distribution bars to spread the load weight evenly, weight-distributing hitches increase stability when towing a heavier travel trailer. This hitch is usually matched by the hitch manufacturer to the amount of weight you plan to tow. Sway control devices can also be used to reduce trailer swaying.

Carrying Capacities

When it comes to towing, it comes down to how much weight you plan on towing and the type of hitch receiver. Use the following information to gauge hitch classes and their rated carrying capacities:

  • ?Class I – Up to 2,000 lb.
  • Class II – Up to 3,500 lb.
  • Class III – Up to 6,000 lb.
  • Class IV – Up to 10,000 lb.
  • Class V – Up to 12,000 lb.
