Toyota is deeply committed to safeguarding the environment's health, extending well beyond the focus on electrifying its vehicle lineup. The improper disposal of automotive batteries poses a significant threat to the environment, often ending up in landfills and exacerbating the pollution crisis. Moreover, these spent batteries contain materials that could be reclaimed and repurposed. In a recent move, Toyota has joined forces with Cirba Solutions to broaden its battery recycling network. With over 60 years of expertise in battery recycling, Cirba Solutions manages everything from collecting old batteries to extracting crucial elements.
This collaboration between Toyota Motor North America and Cirba Solutions enhances the automaker's recycling network for BEVs, PHEVs, and HEVs. Cirba Solutions boasts an impressive 95% recovery rate for extracting critical elements, not only reducing costs for Toyota but also advancing the company closer to its closed-loop target for battery recycling. Benefiting from a substantial grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, Cirba Solutions has upgraded its Lancaster, Ohio facility. Here, the company will extract battery-grade materials from spent batteries and reintegrate them into the supply chain for future use in EVs.
