Toyota Safety Sense exists because Toyota prioritized safety well before launching one of the world’s most respected driver-assist systems. The company maintains a dedicated division focused on advancing safety technology. In 2011, Toyota established the Collaborative Safety Research Center (CSRC) to concentrate its efforts on mobility safety. Since then, the CSRC has partnered with universities, hospitals, and experts to explore ways to reduce crash injuries, better understand driver behavior, and prevent accidents. The outcomes have been impressive.

Toyota Safety Research Center Completes 100th Project

Toyota’s CSRC dedicates itself to collision mitigation research. Given the serious consequences of crashes, every innovation that enhances protection for drivers and passengers marks progress in automotive safety. On June 3, 2025, Toyota announced that its collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) AgeLab resulted in the CSRC’s 100th completed research project.

CSRC Director Danil Prokhorov reflected on this achievement, saying, “This is a significant milestone for CSRC and our commitment to pursuing Toyota’s vision of a future safe mobility society for all with the ultimate goal of zero traffic fatalities.” The research with MIT examined how drivers and pedestrians interact with technologies like mobile phones and in-vehicle touchscreens.

Supported by MIT AgeLab scientist Dr. Bryan Reimer, this 100th project highlighted the close cooperation between Toyota and MIT. The study generated important insights, including a dataset on voice-based human-machine interaction and driver-pedestrian behavior. Researchers also evaluated how driver-assist features influence driver behavior and how drivers manage non-driving-related tasks.

Toyota’s research center is already planning its next 10 projects. Upcoming collaborations will include partnerships with the University of Waterloo, Oregon State University, Ohio State University Injury Biomechanics Research Center, and Auburn University. For now, Toyota is celebrating this key milestone while focusing on applying the latest findings to enhance safety for all drivers.
