To honor this novel and sustainable energy source, Toyota has showcased the Vivid Solar Sculptural Display, which visitors can now experience at its Research & Development hub in Michigan.
Vivid Solar Sculptural Display Helps Harvest Energy
Brought together by a partnership between Toyota’s Advanced Product Planning Office (APPO) and the Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRINA), this distinct presentation pairs solar tech with an eye-catching range of colors. Beyond its pleasing look, the model actively collects clean electricity. Cultivating alternative energy resources is vital to supporting our ongoing way of life as fossil fuel reserves dwindle.
Built on a 1/6th scale, this carbon-neutral, self-contained layout is composed of 11 triangular towers. By applying advanced lenticular lenses, the development team succeeded in covering the solar panels while keeping their full energy collection potential. In short, the setup acts as a magnificent piece of fine art and an active ecological advancement that yields electricity.
The origins of this unique project go back over ten years. While the standard request arrived in 2020, its foundational engineering was developed over a decade prior. Co-project leader Songtao Wu, a senior principal scientist in the Materials Research Department, noted that TMC initially investigated nanotechnology dynamic color pigments 12 years before, intending to ultimately refine them for solar grid use.
Though financed by TMC, APPO pushed the concept across the North American sector, directing the funding and supporting its corporate production. Today, this Vivid color technology can be integrated with regular solar arrays while keeping more than 90% of the panels' factory efficiency potential.
Co-project leader Brian Woods is equally thrilled to watch the Vivid Solar tech become an active reality. "When you consider the display and promotional applications, there is great ROI potential for this platform," he notes, adding that this modern design pairs an eco-friendly power generator with endless branding possibilities.
