Everyone knows that Toyota is leading the way when it comes to developing great cars that achieve phenomenal miles per gallon, like the Prius. Now it has something else to boast about: The Toyota Mirai was recently named the 2016 World Green Car at the New York International Auto Show!
“Just as Prius changed the world nearly 20 years ago, the hydrogen-powered Mirai is ready to make history,” said Bill Fay, group vice president and general manager, Toyota Division. “With a range of over 300 miles per tank, a refueling time of under five minutes, and emissions that consist only of water vapor, Mirai is leading the world forward toward a more sustainable future.”
The car’s name means “the future” in Japanese, and its excellent range is made possible by the 11 pounds of pressurized hydrogen that it carries. For extra power, Toyota has equipped the four-door sedan with a 1.6-kWh nickel-metal hydride battery, which is neatly tucked away behind the back seats. The Mirai is powered by an electric motor that cranks out 151 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. Its top speed is 111 miles per hour.
Available in a single trim level, the Mirai comes with a long list of great standard features: 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, LED headlights, cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, eight-way heated power front seats with power lumbar adjustments, heated rear seats and a heated tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel.
The car also offers buyers several high-tech features, like a rearview camera, a navigation system with a fuel-station finder, Bluetooth audio and phone connectivity, a JBL audio system with satellite radio and a USB port and an auxiliary jack.
Currently, drivers in California are the only ones who get to buy a Mirai, due to the limited refueling stations that are only available in certain parts of the Golden State. However, Toyota does have plans to make the vehicle much more available, by adding additional refueling stations in New York and Massachusetts.
